creating a phone-free environment at KES
At King Edward’s School, we are committed to creating a learning environment that supports focus, positive social interactions, and pupil wellbeing. As part of this commitment, we are updating our mobile phone policy for pupils in Years 7 to 11, with changes taking effect during the first half of the Autumn Term.
This update is designed to be simple for families, consistent for pupils, and supportive of healthy habits at home as well as in school.
Why a Phone-Free School Day Matters
- In today’s digital world, mobile phones can be a major distraction during the school day. At KES, we believe in helping pupils stay present in their learning, build meaningful relationships, and enjoy a break from the pressures of constant connectivity.
- For the past two years, our school phone policy has required pupils to switch off their phones and store them in lockers. Now, we are introducing the Yondr pouch system, a secure and practical solution already used in schools across the UK.
What Does the New Mobile Phone Policy Mean?
- Pupils who bring a smartphone or smartwatch to school will be required to switch them off and lock them in a Yondr pouch upon arrival.
- Devices will remain inaccessible until pupils leave the school site.
- If your child does not bring a device, you can let us know and a pouch will not be required.
This approach helps pupils stay focused during the school day and encourages healthy digital habits both in school and at home.
Supporting Digital Wellbeing at School and Home
We recognise that technology plays a central role in modern life. Through our Learning for Life programme, pupils will continue to learn about responsible technology use and receive support if they’re struggling with phone use or online interactions.
We also support our parents through expert-led seminars and practical resources. Our next such session is:
6th October: Reclaiming Childhood (Part 2), led by Hannah Dawes, our Head of Learning for Life, focusing on practical ways to support healthy phone use at home.
Advice for New Families
If your child is joining Year 7 in September, we recommend refraining from purchasing a smartphone. If a phone is necessary, we suggest choosing a basic model without internet access. This helps children ease into Senior School life without the distractions of social media and messaging apps.
