mock elections and democracy in action at kes
Last week, Senior School pupils at King Edward's School, Bath embraced the spirit of democracy with a mock election, brilliantly organised by Sixth Form Politics students and the Diversity and Inclusion Group, to mark the UN’s International Day of Democracy.
Meanwhile, our Year 12 and 13 Politics students had the honour of welcoming Baroness Barran MBE to school, as part of the House of Lords’ Education Service. In a fascinating session, Baroness Barran shared insights into how laws are made and the role of the House of Lords.
The Q&A that followed was lively and thought-provoking, with pupils asking about:
- banning smartphones in schools
- lowering the voting age to 16
- whether the House of Lords should be elected
- and how to improve voter turnout
Baroness Barran also spoke about her previous roles in government, including her time as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Education, where she worked on issues such as RAAC in school building.
