Sport is a central part of life at KES Pre-Prep and Junior School, built on a clear principle: every child should take part, feel confident and enjoy being active. From the earliest years through to Year 6, pupils benefit from a programme that is inclusive, ambitious and designed to develop a lifelong love of sport.

INCLUSIVE SPORT FOR EVERY CHILD

Children are introduced to a broad and engaging range of physical activities, building strong foundations in coordination, balance, movement and teamwork. In the Pre-Prep years, weekly PE lessons follow a concept-based curriculum that nurtures key attributes such as curiosity, cooperation, creativity, imagination and the ability to share and work with others.

As pupils progress into the Junior School, the focus develops towards concepts including resilience, problem-solving, communication, leadership and self-motivation. These skills are taught through a variety of units, including gymnastics, dance, functional movement, basketball, problem-solving and the Sports Leaders programme. Structured swimming lessons, delivered by specialist instructors, also form an important part of our provision, ensuring that children develop confidence and competence in the water.

FIXTURES, FESTIVALS AND COMPETITIONS

As pupils progress through the Junior School, Games afternoons provide regular opportunities to develop skills and confidence in our major sports: hockey, rugby, netball and cricket. Opportunities to participate in athletics, football, cross-country and swimming are also woven throughout the sporting programme, ensuring that every child can explore and enjoy a wide range of activities.

All pupils regularly represent KES in fixtures against local schools, gaining valuable experience of competition within a supportive and inclusive environment. Alongside local opportunities, we participate in regional and national events, including IAPS competitions, and regularly host and attend festivals and tournaments. These experiences allow pupils to challenge themselves, develop resilience and teamwork, and represent the School with pride. They also provide appropriate stretch and challenge for our most able performers, enabling them to compete at regional and national level and fulfil their sporting potential.

Highlights from the last year include qualifying for the IAPS National Swimming Championships at the London Aquatic Centre and our U11 boys enjoying an unbeaten season in rugby, including at the prestigious Rosslyn Park National Schools Sevens tournament.

Clubs

Beyond the curriculum, a vibrant co-curricular sports programme enables pupils to develop new skills, pursue their interests and enjoy being active. Squads are available across all major sports, alongside a wide range of clubs and activities including cross-country, football, fencing, athletics, modern dance, ballet and parkour. Pupils also enjoy unique events such as KES Wimbledon and House competitions,

Sport at KES is about community as much as competition, and some of the most memorable moments come from whole-school events. Sports Day is a highlight of the year, bringing pupils, staff and families together in celebration of participation and achievement. The much-anticipated teachers’ inflatable race is always a crowd favourite, adding fun, laughter and a touch of friendly rivalry to the occasion.

The success and popularity of the co-curricular programme reflect the enthusiasm, commitment and talent of our pupils. Through these diverse opportunities, children build confidence, resilience and friendships, while creating lasting memories and experiences beyond the classroom.

Expert, specialist coaching and teaching

At KES, we are incredibly proud of our through-school approach to sport. A shared sporting vision and progressive curriculum ensure a seamless transition between the Pre-Prep and Junior and Senior Schools, creating a consistent and enriching experience for every pupil. Our Pre-Prep and Junior School staff work closely alongside specialist coaches and Senior School Heads of Sport, creating a collaborative environment in which pupils benefit from exceptional teaching and coaching.

This unique partnership provides a consistent approach to PE and sport throughout the School, enabling pupils to build confidently on prior learning. With expertise across a wide range of disciplines, we support every child, from those developing a love of physical activity to those competing at the highest levels.
