An inspiring science week at the senior school
Last week's Science Week at the Senior School aimed to inspire and engage our future scientists with a range of lunchtime talks and events open to pupils in all year groups. There were 'Cool Chemistry' reactions on the way to lunch, Biology dissections led by our Year 12 Biologists, Interform Physics Challenges, a Treasure Hunt and a range of guest speakers, including OE, Amhar, talking about Gravity Jet Suits, designed by Gravity Industries, where he is spending his placement year as part of his Aeronautics and Astronautics degree at the University of Southampton.
During the week, Year 12 Chemists also took part in the Royal Society of Chemistry's Young Analyst Competition at the University of Bath and Year 12 Biologists visited Bath based Biotech start up, InnotiveDx, where they explored careers in Microbiology and Biomedical Sciences.
Science is a popular subject at KES with 23% of Sixth Formers undertaking two Science A Levels. In recent years the School has invested £1m in its Science facilities, boosting the number of laboratories to 12 in total, with an additional lab located at our Junior School.
At A Level last year:
- 40% of Biology grades were A*
- 38% of Chemistry grades were A*
- 42% of Physics grades were A*
GCSEs results were equally strong.
- 43% of Biology entries graded 9
- 38% of Chemistry entries graded 9
- 51% of Physics entries graded 9
Beyond KES, last year 16 medics started their training at Medical School, including Medicine at the Universities of Cambridge and Exeter, whilst other Science destinations included studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of Birmingham, Earth Sciences at the University of Edinburgh, Engineering at Cambridge and Chemistry at the Universities of Oxford and Manchester.
